Camp Hitaga is active THROUGHOUT the year!

Camp Hitaga isn't just for summer camp! We present our own Camp Fire outdoor programs and share Hitaga's facilities and programs with others - Day Cares, Scout troops, church groups, archery clubs, horse associations, the Society for Creative Anachronisms, family reunions, weddings, birthday parties and other user groups - throughout the year.  For more information:

  Wild Flowers & Wild Foods Walk
 
Enjoy and learn about the beautiful & edible plants at Camp Hitaga -
then enjoy some s'mores and wild teas around a campfire!
 


Topics / Activities include:
Spring Wildflower habitats, identification, names and uses
Wild Food habitats, identification, how to harvest to ensure plants will
thrive for future generations, and safe preparation methods
Photography: Bring a camera and you can use the photos to make your own field guide at home!
Tasting the harvest: Hopefully a few morels along with some Pine Needle /Catnip Tea
 And of course, a few camp songs around the cooking fire, and s'mores for desert, too!

Event presenter
Kimberli Maloy has been studying and eating wild plants for years. She is the owner of Destiny’s Garden Herbs, works in conjunction with Matthew 25’s Urban Farm in Cedar Rapids and is certified by the Iowa State University Extension Service as a Morel Mushroom Identification Specialist. She is also a Hitaga Alumna and former Camp Director, so she knows Hitaga's trails well! She is currently a Middle School Theatre Director for the Cedar Rapids School District.

Program fee: $5 per person ($4 for Camp Fire members)
Designed for families and open to all ages, but note that trails are rugged in places.
Event will be held rain or shine!

Be our guest and experience the great outdoors Camp Hitaga-style!
 
Activities such as archery, craft project and a scavenger hunt
will be available for everyone (parents included) to enjoy!
We'll have complimentary lemonade and cookies too!
 

Families interested in learning more about our summer camp programs should especially make plans to join us on one of these days, as camp staff and volunteers will be on hand to give guided tours and showcase our fantastic facilities.
